Bangladesh Chhatra League: The Child of History, The Creator of History
“The history of Chhatra League is the history of Bengalis”—this famous statement by the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, is not just a declaration of pride for an organization but a testament to its indelible connection with the national liberation movements of Bangladesh. Founded on January 4, 1948, by Bangabandhu himself, the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) is more than a student organization; it has served as a torchbearer for Bengali nationalism. From the inception of the organization, through the struggle for independence, to the restoration of democracy, BCL has played a pivotal role in every crucial moment in the history of Bangladesh.
Historical Role of Bangladesh Chhatra League
Since its establishment, Bangladesh Chhatra League has been at the forefront of every national crisis. From the Language Movement of 1952 to the Liberation War of 1971 and the post-independence struggle for the rights of the masses, BCL has consistently demonstrated unparalleled dedication. In the 1952 Language Movement, the bloodshed of student martyrs such as Rafiq, Shafiq, Jabbar, and Barkat safeguarded the Bengali language, setting a profound example of sacrifice. This monumental act remains a debt that the nation can never repay, and the Bangladesh Chhatra League’s contribution to this remains forever engraved in history.
In the 1971 Liberation War, more than 17,000 leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Chhatra League sacrificed their lives. This war was not just for the independence of a country, but it was a battle of valor and selflessness, one that embodied the greatest sacrifice of the Bengali people. Therefore, the words of Bangabandhu—“The history of Chhatra League is the history of Bengalis”—carry an immense depth and relevance even today, and they will continue to hold significance in the future.
Chhatra League's Role After Independence
Even after the independence of Bangladesh, the Chhatra League has consistently fulfilled its historic duties during every national crisis. From movements to secure the right to vote and food for the common people, to opposing military rule, combating terrorism, resisting historical distortions, and demanding the trial of war criminals, Chhatra League has remained active on all fronts. Its role in protecting the spirit of the Liberation War and standing firm against those who sought to distort history or support terrorism cannot be understated.
In the 1990s, during the anti-autocratic movements, Chhatra League played a key role. Standing against dictatorship and in favor of the people, Chhatra League became a symbol of hope for the student community. This struggle paved the way for a democratic Bangladesh. In recent times, the Chhatra League has fought against the rise of terrorism within the country. Its steadfast actions against both internal and external elements supporting terrorism have been commendable.
The Conspiracy to Ban Chhatra League: A Blow to National Unity
On October 23, 2024, the current illegal government, through a decree from the Ministry of Home Affairs, made the outrageous decision to ban the Bangladesh Chhatra League. This decision is a direct attack on the democratic struggle of the country. The historic contributions and sacrifices made by Chhatra League cannot be ignored, and this ban is merely a political conspiracy. Behind this conspiracy are individuals like Yunus and Asif Nazrul, who, with the support of foreign masters, are attempting to cultivate terrorism within the country to serve their interests.
The leaders of Jamaat-Shibir and the banned militant group Hizb ut-Tahrir, who have infiltrated the government, believe that the greatest obstacle to establishing a terrorist state in Bangladesh is the Bangladesh Chhatra League. By suppressing the Chhatra League, they aim to spread chaos and instability within the country. However, history has shown that no force has ever been able to curb Chhatra League’s role, and this attempt will also fail. Chhatra League has always been the most prominent force in preserving Bangladesh’s democracy and the ideals of the Liberation War, and it will continue to be so.
Rejecting the Actions of the Illegal Government
We firmly believe that this government is illegal and unconstitutional. An illegitimate government has no right to ban a democratic organization like Bangladesh Chhatra League. The Chhatra League is not just a student organization; it is the strength of the nation, the foundation of its history and ideals. We reject this illegal decision and call upon the people to stand united against this unlawful regime.
This illegal government is not accountable to the people. They are trampling upon the rights of the citizens and endangering the nation's sovereignty and independence. While we denounce and protest their actions, we do not seek to legitimize their authority. Instead, we want to remind them that such ludicrous and malevolent decisions will bear no fruit. The Bangladesh Chhatra League will soon rise again in its full glory, and this audacious attempt will soon turn into a nightmare for those responsible.
Chhatra League: A Guiding Force for the Future
The Bangladesh Chhatra League, following the continuity of its glorious past, will continue to lead the nation in every crisis in the future. Chhatra League is not only the child of history; it is also the creator of history. In every national emergency, the role of Chhatra League is irreplaceable, and this will remain so for all time.
The future generations must carry forward the legacy of the student leaders who led the nation’s freedom struggle. The development, democracy, and the spirit of the Liberation War—values embedded in the heart of Chhatra League—will be passed down from generation to generation.
Conclusion
The attempt to ban the Bangladesh Chhatra League will not succeed. Chhatra League has never failed to fulfill its historical responsibilities in the past, nor will it in the future. In the history of Bangladesh, the Chhatra League stands as a chapter of pride, symbolizing the nation’s struggle for freedom, independence, and democracy. Therefore, this absurd decision will soon be reduced to a bad dream, and the Bangladesh Chhatra League will once again shine in all its glory.
